Water Heater
Repair And Installation FAQs
Got questions? We are here to help.
Usually, a hot water heater takes about 45 minutes to heat up fully. Water heaters will take between 45 minutes and an hour to heat up if they have been turned off or if they have just been installed. Based on the volume and BTU of the water heater, recovery varies, but if after about 1 hour there is still no hot water then the unit is not working properly. Gas water heaters recover faster than electric water heaters, but regardless of the type you purchase, a water heater should heat and produce hot water within about 1 hour.
Water heaters that produce smelly water are caused by mineral compounds in the water supply reacting with the heater inside. Sometimes a water heater can produce “smelly water” depending on the chemical composition of your water. Water smelling like rotten eggs is caused by a combination of hydrogen, sulfur, and bacteria. Magnesium anode rods installed within the tank are designed to protect the surface of the tank, but they also generate hydrogen, which smells bad once they come into contact with sulfur or bacteria in the water. This issue may be resolved by switching from a magnesium anode to another type. Water that smells or is discolored is rarely a dangerous condition, but it is wise to consult an expert.
Consider these factors: Are you increasing, decreasing, or staying about the same? Could a buildup of sediment at the bottom of your heater have caused your heater to appear undersized? Are you planning on moving in the near future and if so, what size water heater might a prospective buyer expect in your size home? Do you get frustrated when you realize you haven’t got hot water or is it just an inconvenience? To avoid running out of hot water, are you willing to space your showers and laundry usage? What importance do you place on energy conservation and water conservation?
When it’s time to replace your water heater, there are many options. There are several factors to consider when selecting a water heater:
– Your household’s size and usage
– The demand for water in the future
– How long you plan to stay in your current residence
Do some research and compare your options before finalizing your purchase. Gas, electric, and propane-powered tank-style hot water heaters are available with capacities ranging from 30 gallons to 100 gallons. High efficiency and tankless water heaters are rapidly gaining popularity due to their energy and water saving capabilities.
